By JOHN SETH, Associated Press The Trump administration has no intention of using the death sentence as a tool to punish people convicted of crimes, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Thursday.
“We’re not going to use it in a political sense,” Spicer said.
He said the administration is focused on “changing our criminal justice system.”
“We are focusing on a very specific goal,” Spicer added.
“And it’s to make sure that when people are sentenced to death, we don’t put them on the death row.”
The president’s remarks were in response to a question from the Associated Press on whether the administration will use the “death penalty” as a way to send people to death row.
“Absolutely, we’re not gonna do that,” Spicer told reporters.
The president has expressed concern about the use of capital punishment, especially as the number of executions has increased.
In January, he said that the death chamber is “not a very good death penalty” because it “is so brutal and so unfair.”
